Without spoiling the story line or the ending.... midway through the movie the main character faces a unique challenge and completely freezes. Her family's future is on the line, her happiness, her success, her self-worth, all of it hinge on this moment and by the looks of the scene, she is going to blow it. The main character is fading away, failing to stand up straight, and mumbling. Finally, her best friend makes a timely phone call and literally and proverbially props the woman up, straightens her back and pushes her forward into success.
When the audience learns the identity of the friend making the phone call, I gasped out loud making enough noise that my husband turned to look at me. This act of friendship, of knowing exactly what Joy, the main character, needed and when she needed it has occurred many times over the course of our story.
Faces of friends, and family and colleagues flashed like a slide show through my mind. Times and places where just the word was shared, where colleagues carried the meeting I was supposed to remember and where good hearts sat and listened accompanied their faces.
I was thankful, through my tears, for their faces, for their ears, for their words and for their light that held us up - that continues to hold us up.
